Project Design and Management Services
Up until the late 1980’s, instant, reliable two way radio communication – long a part of Surface Mining
Operations was almost non existent in underground mines. The difficulty and high cost and lack of reliable technologies being widely available made communications underground difficult.
With industry demanding better communications underground as a major part of dramatic safety improvements in underground mining the Leaky Feeder Radio system was launched onto the Australian Market. Now a part of nearly every underground mining operation across the country the Leaky Feeder System has revolutionised communications underground. For the first time, mine wide instant voice communication became achievable for all mining operations.
In the approximately fifteen years of use of Leaky Feeder Systems in Australia the systems have developed and improved to be a widely accepted and almost transparent part of modern underground Mining.
Global Communication Services, a Kalgoorlie based company, has been at the forefront of Leaky feeder installations and services in Australia for many years. The company started as a division of Hahn Electrical Contracting in 1994 then as Global Communication Services following the takeover of GCS in September of 2001. The company has invested heavily in maintaining a strong position to offer systems and services of the highest standard to the Australian Market.
Nothing ever stands still and GCS has over time recognised the need for industry tohave greater flexibility and greater application for the Leaky Feeder systems. Today in 2004 the company has brought to the Australian market, the Varis Mine Technology Leaky Feeder system. The Varis system offer Mine operators greater usable bandwidth and reliable remote and local diagnostic systems. The Varis system is one of the most advanced on the world market today and over 20 mining operations across Australia in the last two years have adopted the equipment. The ability to “bolt on” to any existing High Band VHF system or as a stand alone new system enables Varis Ranger to bring its inherent benefits to any system, new or old.
As the industry moves forward in a continual search for new, safer and more efficient ways of working, Global Communication Services continue to work to bring better solutions to our valued customers. New product developments include underground remote controlled blasting systems using Technology from Rothenbuhler Engineering USA. These systems operate over Leaky Feeder networks and give Mine operators the option of firing multiple headings underground from the safety of the surface and for the first time to have truly two way communications between the remotes and master control which is an important tool in reducing risk and the possibility of misfire. Other applications for Mine Communications include equipment remote control of pumping, ventilation, air quality monitoring. Mine operators can save significant energy costs with these technologies not to mention enjoy considerable environmental benefits that such energy savings bring.
